Again the torch is passed

October 30, 2016

generationsIt’s official.  According to recent census data the “millennial” generation (those born between the years 1982 and 1997) has surpassed the elder “Baby Boomers” (1946 to 1964) as the largest living generation in America today.  (75.4 to 74.9 million respectively)

As a “boomer” I couldn’t decide whether to congratulate you or send condolences, so I punted and instead present this open letter for your consideration.

As a member of the generation that came of age in the light of his words and the shadow of his death, I relay to you from January 20, 1961 the words of one John Fitzgerald Kennedy: “We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans….”

If there was a way to muck things up any worse than they already are I’m sure with a little more time we could figure out a way to do it. I mean, if in just 8 years we can put an extra $9 trillion dollars of debt onto you and future generations with nothing to show for it but calls for more government to “fix it”, we can muck up anything.

Rebelling against the structure and discipline needed for our parents to survive the Great Depression and World War II, we took the invention of the birth control pill and catapulted America down a path of free love, anything goes, me, me, me mentality that has left you with a society fractured and dysfunctional and a popular culture that is just plain sick.  I can’t fix it but I am profoundly sorry, you deserved better.

While you don’t realize it now, you’re being lied to; By the national media, by your university professors, your Facebook, Google and Yahoo “news” feeds and most of all by the politicians who use them all to bend you to their will.

If you’re spending your time over whether you’re getting your “fair share” from what others have produced, you’re wasting your time.  You will never get as much from someone else as you can from yourself.

If you’re blocking interstates for “social justice” you’re wasting your compassion.  America offers more opportunities to anyone of any age, race or sex today than at any time in our history.  Volunteer at whatever cause your passion guides you to and I promise, you’ll do society a far more solid justice than chanting and marching ever will.

And if you believe the “it’s time to make government work” mantra, you’re living the biggest lie of all.

That “first revolution” to which Kennedy referenced was not won by government bureaucrats regulating a “better way”, but of patriots’ demanding “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.

We’ve made a lot of mistakes but perhaps our biggest was letting the liberal left teach you an out of context and in some cases blatantly false, version of your own history.  America is not an oppressor nation, and it is the people controlling the government, not vice versa, that secure your freedom.

You have been presented Kennedy’s proverbial torch at a critical time in American history, and nothing less than the future of the nation is now at stake.  Yeh, it sucks but it is what it is.

Come November 8th will you choose to begin to restore America back to the Constitutional Republic she was meant to be or continue her on the march towards ever more intrusive and all more powerful government?   Will the torch you pass to your own future generation be that brightly lit beacon of history or but a smoldering snub reminder of what once was?

Yes, my generation pretty much screwed it all up and yes, you have every right to be angry.  All I can do at this point is to ask you not to let that anger drive you to compounding our mistakes by making an even greater one of your own.

One that I promise, if you do, you will absolutely, positively, live to regret.  Trust me, I’m a boomer, and if there’s one thing we do know, it’s regret.
