Friday Follies, Sunday Edition

March 25, 2018

A few years back I did a column I dubbed Friday Follies.  A short list of the worst of the worst of the piles of bovine excrement thrown at we, the unsuspecting (and undeserving) public, during any given week.

Trying to come up with a single topic this week I found myself hip deep in story after story making me angrier and angrier.  Each story a column itself, but with the pace of news these days that would have meant others left out.

So for better or worse, I return you to an old classic and its timeless introduction:

Tis that time once again when we take stock of the inane and foolish put upon us by those forced to navigate life with an amount of gray matter just slightly larger than that found in your average toad.

#3  The three legacy television networks kick us off this week.

I suppose there could be a follies column without our national media earning a spot on the playbill but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve used the phrase: “If you only got your news from the three television networks…” referencing what you would NOT know if they were your only source.  And sadly, it’s happened once again.

When now private citizen (thank you Lord) Hillary Clinton at a recent conference in India, delved back into the 2016 Presidential election by again blaming everyone but herself, her comments were on internet and cable tv screens and in newspapers around the globe.

From her belittling married white women by saying that they bend to “a sort of ongoing pressure to vote the way that your husband, your boss, your son, whoever, believes you should.” and continued attacking millions of non-compliant Americans paraphrasing the Trump campaign as ”‘You didn’t like black people getting rights? You don’t like women, you know, getting jobs? You don’t want to, you know, see that Indian American succeeding more than you are? Whatever your problem is — I’m going to solve it.”

As offensive as that bloviating is to tens of millions of Americans, even worse was that ABC, CBS and NBC didn’t even think it was worth mentioning.

According to the Media Research Center writer Rich Noyes : “As of Monday morning, March 19, ABC, CBS and NBC have so far failed to mention Clinton’s comments on either their morning or evening news programs”

It’s one thing to play the “if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it…” thought game.  It’s entirely another for major news outlets to play the “if our former favorite candidate attacks millions of Americans and we don’t report it, will no one know it?”

#2  Oakland, California Mayor Libby Schaaf  who just last week stood by her decision to tip off illegal aliens that an ICE raid was coming saw three of those “community” re-arrested on new charges.

Robbery and gun crimes for one, a DUI for another, and the third for spousal abuse. Published reports show he had already been deported twice and had convictions ranging from hit and run, DUI, and drug possession.

With a “community” like that, and a mayor that stupid, no wonder the Raiders moved to Las Vegas.

#1  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell takes King Toad honors this week for the $1.3 trillion dollar omnibus spending bill.  A bill that has Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi singing with all their might “How great thou bill” and taxpayers grabbing for their pitchforks.

Yet as disgraceful as piling more debt on to the backs of future generations for the expediency of avoiding yet another Senate made government shutdown crisis is, McConnell’s managing of the Senate is even worse.

The House did its part.  It passed twelve separate appropriations bills that should have been taken up by McConnell and debated on the Senate floor months ago.  Yet rather than force the Senate to do its work and keep it in session, day in and day out until such work be completed, he just whines about the Democrats not cooperating and the 60 vote threshold needed to debate.  (Maybe a Clinton/McConnell 2020 campaign in the works?)

Mitch McConnell has again forced upon the American taxpayer the price of his own incompetence, and all for a measly six month reprieve from what is shaping up to be another round of McConnell inaction and yet another omnibus bill; A round that will begin just a few weeks before the mid-term elections.

And a round that will bring upon Republicans election pain that they will have no one to blame but their own, incompetent, worthless selves.

Publisher Note:  A version of this column first appeared in the Sunday, March 25th 2018 print edition of the Joplin Globe.
