Drowning In Debt

While Washington and the media tout the $700 billion bailout, it would be good to remember that they conveniently leave out all the other “goodies” they put into the bill that pushes the total nearer to a nice round one trillion smackeroo’s.

And speaking of a trillion. Seems we’ve already pre-spent a few of them. Over ten trillion to be exact. So many in fact that the Times’ Square national debt clock ran out of digits this week. Set up in 1989 to publicize the cancerous growth on our children’s future, no one at the time envisioned we could ever be so stupid as a country to let it climb past the thirteen digit range.

But as Forrest reminds us: “stupid is as stupid does”, and as sure as the sun rises in the east (and our Chinese and Arab financial backers at present) Congress has shown the restraint of an alcoholic in a warehouse liquor store and spent this country into a hole that will take not one but several generations to emerge from.

So as stocks continue to post record slides, and the politicians pontificate pouring hundreds of billions more at the “crisis”, the dollar sign has been removed from the sign to make room for the fourteenth digit needed to display the ever climbing debt.

The link below includes a CNN interview with Douglas Durst, son of the founder of the clock, and a companion print article in the New York Observer.
