Voices: Prefer logic

— After thoroughly belittling Sarah Palin (Globe, Sept. 13), Andrew Hogan, in his letter, ends with: “… I have to confess that I’ll always pick logic over flair any day.” In that spirit, let’s take a peek at Mr. Hogan’s “logic.”
1. He derides her as being “right wing” for opposing the polar bear as an endangered species and not drinking the global warming Kool-Aid.
Logic would dictate public policy be made after all sides weigh in and debate is settled, not knee-jerk derived with no regard to economic and social consequences.
2. Mr. Hogan incorrectly states that Mrs. Palin thinks God is on her side and she “insists that she knows better.”
Her actual quote is much different. She prayed that our soldiers are “on a task that is from God”… and hoping “that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”
A principal quite similar to when on Jan. 20, 1961, John Fitzgerald Kennedy ended his inaugural address with “… asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on Earth, God’s work must truly be our own.”
Or perhaps the great Franklin Delano Roosevelt, June 6th, 1944, “… help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee … let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts … Lord give us faith”.
(And we all know how “right wing” JKF and FDR were, don’t we?)
Only today, after 40 years of liberal attack on everything religious, does a public belief in God make you a right-wing nut. Considering our history and founding principles, such a concept truly does defy logic.
3. We are asked to believe that John McCain’s age is critical and that he is so “old” there is a high chance of him “keeling over in office.”
The fact is, Barack Obama is the least experienced and accomplished candidate for president in at least 50 years. Yet Mr. Hogan would have us place more weight on Palin’s “chance” than Obama’s certain inexperience if he is elected. How is that logical?
While it is true that Mr. Obama has a great “flair” for delivering speeches, I too prefer logic and by such will be voting for McCain this Nov. 4.
