— Anyone ever wonder where the term “nickel and dimed to death” comes from? Imagine my surprise when an article in the Globe (“Sales tax collection higher than expected”) gave me the answer once and for all. One cent for the city, 1/2 cent for public safety, 1/2 cent for streets, 1/4 cent for parks/water, 3/8 for capital projects … they all seem so small when being told we must vote yes. After all, it’s just a little bit. But one on top of the other and you’re at almost 3 percent just for city taxes, not counting state and county sales tax.
Makes me wonder about another common phrase:
“Buddy, can ya spare a dime?”
