Goebbels channeled by MSNBC’s Scarborough for Morning Joe gun tirade

April 25, 2013

Channeling the spirit of Joseph Goebbels, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough is taking his MorningJoe political talk show to new levels.  Unfortunately, those levels are not of the ascending nature.

Scarborough’s recent obsession with gun control is taking what was once at least a minimal platform for political discussion and fast turning into but a soapbox of one tirade after another against anyone who dares disagree with the pre-approved propaganda points.

I have been following this nation’s politics and the news reporting on it for over 35 years.

And in all those 35 years I have never witnessed a more embarrassing spectacle, a more disgusting display, a more pathetic portrayal of propaganda posing as journalism than that which was perpetrated upon the American people the morning of April 18th, 2013 by the producers and hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Never before have I witnessed a self-proclaimed “news” show relegate itself so easily and happily to Goebbels status just to support a political agenda.

Never before have I witnessed a more disgusting display of outright lies, obfuscation and misinformation put forth as “truth” to promote a political position.

Never before have I watched as one by one, the pictures of United States Senators were paraded as parasites to be ridiculed for no other reason than having a different view on the Constitution than that of the hosts and their master, one President Barack Obama.

The vitriol and hate that spewed forth from the mouths of Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Mike Barnicle, Howard Dean, and the rest was like nothing I’ve ever seen before.  (And trust me, I’ve seen a lot.  Hell, even Toure’s tirade against Dr. Ben Carson is at least understood in the context of who Toure is and his need to shock for attention.)

That MSNBC, a fully controlled division of NBC News would be allowed to throw out such smears and innuendo as it did this morning without any sense of objectivity or even remote resemblance to journalistic ethics shows just how low the once revered network has sunk.

Consider this callout from the Morning Joe website for listing “those who shall be named”:

The morning after the Senate failed to pass a bipartisan agreement on gun control, the Morning Joe crew called out those 45 senators, including the four Democrats, who voted “No.”

On Capitol Hill, less than 55% of the Senate was willing to back a proposal that polls say is supported by roughly 90% of Americans,” co-host Mika Brzezinski said on Thursday’s Morning Joe. “As a public service, we feel the need to read all the names of all the senators who voted ‘No’ on the issue…We have a 3-hour show. We’ll take the time.”

We are the 90%,” host Joe Scarborough said. “And 90% will not be ignored.”

There were only four Republicans who voted for the measure, leading Scarborough to declare, “This party is moving toward extinction. A new party is going to replace it.”

Everyone who voted yesterday knows after reading that bill, in their heart of hearts, that the bill would have made the America safer,” he added. “The American people were insulted yesterday.”

And now, the 45 senators who voted against background checks.

The clip ends with Scarborough’s petulant:

These people will pay at the polls,” Scarborough said. “Mark my words.”

Yet for all their screeching, for all their Pravda best, not a one of them bothered to mention the 48 Democrat Senators who voted NO on the Grassley-Cruz amendment that addressed mental health issues, increased enforcement of existing laws on the books and would have prevent another Fast and Furious debacle. (HINT to Morning Joe.  More Democrats, and only Democrats, voted against Grassley-Cruz’s common sense reform that might have actually done some good than the you so eagerly vilified this morning.)

And not a one of them bothered to mention the “extras” in the Toomey-Manchin amendment that made it far more than the “universal background checks”.

Obviously, telling the truth about the bill and the over-reach by the Democrats was just too much of a burden for the dutiful party members.  After all, who wants to be burdened with facts when it’s much more fun to call Senators “cowards” and supporters of “rapists, murderers, and terrorists”?

But as “shameful” as their actions were, they do bring to mind a few additional points to ponder:

Where were your slides of shame when Senators voted to steal hundreds of billions of dollars from our children and grandchildren to prop up public sector unions and pay back Obama’s political supporters under the name of “stimulus”?

Where were your slides of shame when a few key Senators sold out the country in exchange for backroom deals for their states under the name of “The Affordable Care Act”?

Where were your slides of shame when the Senate passed the power grab known as Dodd/Frank that does nothing to prevent too big to fail but hurts small, community banks all under the name of “fairness”?

Where indeed MorningJoe, just where indeed, were any of you as one Senator after another, for one shameless pander after another put his/her “aye” vote into the annals of history for one pathetic piece of legislation after another?

Not since the old Soviet News Agency TASS has there been a more blatant example of party line lip synching  then was presented by the Morning Joe politburo this morning.

Scarborough’s claim to fame is coming to Congress during the ’94 Gingrich Contract with America era.  A claim he suddenly gave up when just months into his 4th term he abruptly resigned.

While Scarborough has so far successfully dodged tough questioning surrounding the reasons for his divorce, his resignation and the 2001 death of an intern in his Florida office, someone needs to remind him, his 15 minutes were up years ago.

He may have gone in a Constitutional conservative but after this morning’s tirade there can be no doubt he is now fully immersed with the D.C. cocktail crowd.  Whatever he once may have believed about the Constitution, our Founders and the rights they set forth to protect generation after generation has now been fully replaced by the need for acceptance and that next party invitation in the mailbox.

Scarborough has every right to express his opinion, but in the words of a man far greater than he will ever be, the late great Daniel Patrick Moynihan: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”

Maybe Scarborough’s just too entrenched with the cocktail crowd to understand, maybe he’s just protecting his paycheck, maybe he just doesn’t care, in the final analysis none of that really matters.

Because after almost four decades of watching it all on both sides of the aisle, there is only one thing I know certain:

Scarborough’s performance this morning may get him the swank and the praise that he now so obviously craves but it will never again get him past the word “hypocrite”.

And those are my words and you can mark em any way you want.

(Publisher’s note:  This column addresses only the morning of Thursday, April 18th, 2013.  Since then the vitriol and hate has only gotten worse.  Any other show on any other network would have already been repudiated for such blatant lies, obfuscations and character assassinations of duly elected, constitutionally obligated United States Senators.  But Morning Joe is MSNBC and MSNBC is NBC and NBC is Comcast so not only will it not end, look for it to get even worse.

UPDATE:  H/T to the Daily Caller for its “A tale of two Scarboroughs: From rabid gun rights crusader to gun control advocate” story. Utilizing his own NRA questionnaires from his time in Congress the DC exposes Scarborough’s hypocrisy in now calling those who disagree with him “cowards” and “supporters of rapists”.

The Honorable Louis Brandeis stated:  “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants”.  Let us hope that after years of being able to hide from the truth, Scarborough will at last get the “sunlight” he so rightly deserves.
