No Lesson Learned?

Apple CEO Steve Ballmer might want to heed the famous George Santayana quote:
“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

WIRED magazine reports that 17 mobile companies have committed to Micro USB chargers on all their cellphones by January 1, 2012. FINALLY, in the not too distant future, ONE charger for many devices.

Aside from the convenience factor, this is also a case study for environmentalism done right. It reduces overall cell phone production, greatly reduces waste from discarded chargers, and cuts down on energy and materials. (source: WIRED) AND, it’s all being done WITHOUT government intervention and regulation.

BUT, one conspicuous major player is missing: APPLE. In a snub to the environmental movement, the present plan is for Apple to retain it’s proprietary charging systems. (Evidently raking in the “green” is more important to Apple than “going green”.)

Enter the time warp:

The year is 1985 and a young Bill Gates approached then Apple CEO John Sculley to license the Apple operating system to third parties. Scully said no, Gates licensed Windows, and Apple was relegated to perpetual PC purgatory. Withouth the Ipod, Iphone and other gadgets, Apple by now would most probably not exist at all.

The year is 2009 and once again Apple turns inward, ignoring future trends.

Will Apple heed Santayana’s warning before it’s too late?

Only time till tell as Ballmer seems to have made up his mind and he’s NOT talking.
