Friday Follies: Obama’s take on free press & Constitution – LA union still against students – Drugs for drinks

The Obama’s again on the attack against the freedom of speech and the Constitution in general, a Louisiana teachers union suing to deny children a choice to choose charter schools, a drug to be ordered for English drinkers, and a trivia win.

Yep, it’s Friday and “Tis that time once again when we take stock of the inane and foolish put upon us by those forced to navigate life with an amount of gray matter just slightly larger than that found in your average toad”

#5  Taken for a Ride  I open this week with a little self-congratulation.  Each week, Bret Baier, news anchor extraordinaire of Fox News’ Special Report does a Twitter Trivia contest regarding something broadcast on a previous show.  This week it was on this story:

In today’s episode of government waste, $300,000 of taxpayer money — your money — to study riding a bicycle.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) says better understanding of how humans interact with bicycles will lead to improved bike designs.

House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith disagrees — quote — “What’s really poorly understood is why the NSF wasted $300,000 of taxpayer money on this project. Bicycling is a $65 billion per year global industry that invests hundreds of millions in research and development.”

I was in the field Tuesday checking my work email when Bret’s question came across my phone:

Being a die hard Special Report viewer (If you’re not, you most definitely SHOULD BE)  I instinctively knew the answer and in a “why not” moment responded:

And got back this:

Lo and behold, your humble columnist (who’s luck is solidly on the “none” side of the ledger when it comes to contests,) actually won the twitter trivia for the week.  No notice of any actual “prize” being won but I did get a follow from the great, the amazing, the phenomenal Bret Baier so in my mind, that’s better than anything from the promo closet.

But my joy of winning is tempered once again by the fact that the American taxpayer is being forced to fund yet another useless study that common sense has already solved.

Is there no greater loser than today’s federal leviathan that just spews out money with absolutely no regard for the sacrifice and toil that went into earning that money?

#4  New drug for ‘mild alcoholics’ drinking two glasses of wine a night  This story may be coming in from across the pond but we all know how much American statists love the English form of socialized medicine so it’s only a matter of time before it’s presented here.  When one considers the amount of intrusion into personal lives being pushed by Michelle Obama and Obamacare in general, the unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness will soon be as alien to the American citizen as that darling little imp that Sigourney Weaver introduced us to back in that stone age time of 1979.

From The Telegraph story:

GPs will prescribe nalmefene and actively ask about patients’ alcohol consumption, under new plans by national health watchdog Nice to tackle alcohol abuse….

Hundreds of thousands of people drinking half a bottle of wine a night are to be put on the first ever drug to help reduce alcohol consumption, under plans announced by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Men drinking three pints of beer and women drinking two large glasses of wine per night and who do not cut down within two weeks should be prescribed a new drug, Nice has said………….

The drug, which costs £3 per tablet, is taken when people feel the urge to have a drink and stops them from wanting more than one.

The plans will cost £288m per year and it is estimated to save 1,854 lives over five years and prevent 43,074 alcohol-related diseases and injuries over the same period.

Whether it’s there or here, the bureaucratic justification is always the same.  “Estimate” lives saved, illness prevented, ER visits deterred, etc…etc…etc…and then attack anyone who dares to question the legitimacy of the “estimate”.  Cost benefit analysis in government amounts to nothing more than “Hey Joe, we want to implement this policy, make up some numbers that we can use to justify it and we’ll put out a press release this afternoon.”

#3  Teachers Union Backing Landrieu Files Anti-Charter School Lawsuit  For the record, my entire education was from a public school  K-12 a small rural Kansas farm town, college at Wichita State.  An education mind you that had me making extra cash in college by doing chemical equations for less than educated private school educated freshmen that didn’t have a clue.  Chemistry that mind you I had taken as a sophomore in High School.

There are still many of those schools and teachers within our public system but they are forever drowned out and kept down by the unions and the democrat party.  Latest example coming from Louisiana and yet another union suing to stop funding for charter schools.  From the Washington Free Beacon:

A teachers union that endorsed Democratic incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu (D., La.) is suing the state of Louisiana to restrict funding for charter schools.

The Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE) filed a lawsuit in the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge on Monday that would eliminate $60 million for dozens of schools.

The lawsuit attacks charters as insufficiently “public,” and bemoans that school systems, and teachers unions, have “no control whatsoever” over charter schools. Charter schools are publicly funded, but privately run.

Never mind whether the charter schools are actually working, never mind if the children are actually getting a better education.  All that is secondary to union power and control.

But every day we’re hearing about some democrat somewhere screaming that conservatives don’t care about America’s children because they’re against teachers unions.

#2  Reporter Barred From Reporting at Michelle Event  From The White House Dossier:

A veteran reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Monday she was prevented from talking to the crowd during an event at which First Lady Michelle Obama spoke.

Michelle was appearing Monday on behalf of Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke.

The reporter, Meg Kissinger, said she was “creeped out” by the Orwellian encounter with officials from the White House and the Burke campaign. She posted her frustration on her Facebook page:

During her remarks, Mrs. Obama asserted that Burke “doesn’t care about politics.” I suppose she should let her aides know.

But what is even creepier is the fact that the majority of Americans will never know of the incident because the establishment media is more concerned with protecting the agenda than reporting the truth.

#1  Fired Up Obama to Immigration Activists: ‘No Force On Earth Can Stop Us’ With the sub-title ‘Si se puede, si votamos! Yes, we can, if we vote!’, the Weekly Standard clues us in on just how radical Barack Obama truly is:

A fired up President Barack Obama had a message to immigration activists at a dinner this evening in Washington, D.C.: “no force on earth can stop us.”……… “The clearest path to change is to change [the voter turnout] number,” said Obama “Si se puede, si votamos! Yes, we can, if we vote!”

Translation:  Vote early, vote often and when they ask for your ID to prove you’re eligible to vote call them racists and go find a television crew that will be more than happy to share your story of how evil and cruel Republicans are for wanting to secure the integrity of the voting booth.

“And six years ago, I asked you to believe, and tonight, I ask you to keep believing, not just in my ability to bring about change, but in your ability to bring about change. Because in the end, DREAMer is more than just a title, it’s a pretty good description of what it means to be an American.

I don’t know what’s worse.  The fact that he’s still so arrogant to utter such nonsense or that the crowd is still so ignorant to ignore the fact that when he had the chance in his first two years in office he did NOTHING.

Forget Ebola, it’s mass ignorance that’s out of control.

As always, thanks for reading, have a great weekend and I’ll see ya round the Corner on Monday.
