Friday Follies 2015 Inaugural: DeBlasio’s anti-cop judge, California coddles illegals (again), and racism targets Target

January 2, 2015

Bill DeBlasio and a cop hating judge, California coddling illegals and racism comes to target. If I didn’t know better I’d say Tis that time once again when we take stock of the inane and foolish put upon us by those forced to navigate life with an amount of gray matter just slightly larger than that found in your average toad.”

Welcome to Friday Follies 2015. First a bit of housecleaning. I changing up the format a bit this year. Rather than the previous of 5 Follies ranked from 5 to 1, the new and improved (well, different anyway) Follies will now be 3 in no particular order with occasional bonus links as they present themselves at the end.

Why the change? That age old nemesis of brilliance everywhere: Time.

While we all know there is no shortage of Follies material, finding the time to provide the ever insightful and eagerly anticipated weekly commentary you’ve grown accustomed to (you can wipe the coffee off the screen now……go ahead……..I’ll wait. OK, back now? Fresh cup?) for five stories was becoming an ever increasingly more arduous task.

So I decided to cut it down to 3 and go for quality over quantity. (STOP laughing….STOP it I say….STOP it right this very minute!)

In any event, that’s my story and I”m sticking to it. Hope you enjoy this new, improved, thoroughly vetted for quality and consistency, (didn’t I ask you to STOP laughing?) 2015 inaugural edition of Friday Follies.

#1 New York City mayor Bill DeBlasio reappoints anti-cop judge

From the New York Post:

Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered another blow to New York’s Finest on Wednesday when he reappointed a Brooklyn judge who freed without bail two men who threatened cops just days after the Bed-Stuy double police assassination.

The stunning decision came even as one of the suspects — a gang member charged with posting police death threats online — skipped a court date and had a warrant out for his arrest, sources said.

Out here in fly over country such a blatant slap in the face to our rule of law and the men and women who put their lives on the line each and every day to uphold it would not be tolerated. But to the far left loons who support DeBlasio it’s just another step towards “social justice”.

The re-appointment anti-cop judge Laura Johnson is bad enough but a far worse story emerges when you look behind the single judge and look at who he appointed this past July to chair his Advisory Committee on the Judiciary: One Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, a left of left Democrat party faithful who even after reaching mandatory retirement age on the New York Supreme Court just couldn’t help injecting more liberal ideology into the judiciary.

And lest you think I over-react, here’s a couple of snips from her May 1, 2014 speech at the Lexington Democratic Club Dinner

.Strange as it may seem a citizens right to cast a ballot remains at risk today in some parts of our country. Under the guise of preventing voter fraud, several states have passed laws severely restricting voter registration and requiring certain identification from voters to cast a ballot. The result of this state-by-state assault on voting rights has been the disenfranchisement of thousands of voters, among them the elderly, poor and minorities…..

…The right to vote is the very foundation of government by the people, as we know it.  For this reason, striving to establish and protect every citizen’s right to vote should be of paramount concern for each of us.  Whether it is a matter of outright voter suppression like voter ID laws or the intimidation of voters at polling places or the less invidious practices sanctioned by many jurisdictions of felony disenfranchisement, or just problems with new voting machines, all these practices undermine the integrity of our democratic process.

Till I take my last breath as a mortal upon this God’s great Earth I shall never understand how requiring a person presenting at the ballot box to show that he/she is legally authorized to vote via a valid form of identification undermines the process.

In any world but the radical left, ensuring that only legal citizens determine the leaders who will set the policies which will control their lives and determine their ability to achieve personal independence is falsely labeled disenfranchisement.

And what would a good liberal dinner party be without bashing money and politics:

just last month a sharply divided Supreme Court in a case called McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission dramatically changed the political landscape by further chipping away at campaign finance regulations. The Court struck down federal limits on the total amounts individuals may contribute to candidates and political committees departing from earlier precedent that had upheld campaign contribution limits.

Of course nowhere else in her speech will you hear about how recent that “precedent” and that said “precedent” and it’s limit on the 1st Amendment is nowhere mentioned in the actual Constitution of the United States that Ms. Ciparick had so manipulated and twisted while she sat for years embedding her liberal ideology into the judicial system.

And amazingly I can’t for the life of me find any remarks from Ms. Ciparick regarding how terrible the Tom Steyer and George Soros and trial lawyers association money is for democracy.

Nope, like any good lefty she only dislikes campaign finance systems that level the playing field for all. Never mind trying to debate how the old system granted special status to unions giving them undue influence far exceeding any one individual’s. In the minds of people like Ciparick, money that comes from the left is good and pure, while even a dime from the right is corrupting and corrosive.

So in the context of who DeBlasio has in charge of the committee recommending who sits on the New York City judiciary is it any wonder that priority one for all of them is to be a good little leftist and support the cause over the Constitution?

And here’s another little bit on Judge Ciparick from

In October 2012, political science professors Adam Bonica and Michael Woodruff of Stanford University attempted to determine the partisan ideology of state supreme court justices in their paper, State Supreme Court Ideology and ‘New Style’ Judicial Campaigns. A score above 0 indicated a more conservative leaning ideology while scores below 0 are more liberal. Ciparick received a Campaign finance score (CFscore) of -0.69, indicating a liberal ideological leaning. This is more liberal than the average CF score of -0.24 that justices received in New York. The study is based on data from campaign contributions by judges themselves, the partisan leaning of contributors to the judges or, in the absence of elections, the ideology of the appointing body (governor or legislature). This study is not a definitive label of a justice, but an academic gauge of various factors.

Seems Ciparick is almost 3 times as liberal as the “average” justice in an already liberal New York State.

Which begs the question: How much “more liberal than the average” does a judge have to be on the scale before he/she reaches the full blown Bill Ayers-Saul Alinsky spot?

Whatever that number is, by her record and her words, Ciparick passed it a long, long time ago.

#2  California begins issuing driver’s licenses to illegals

What would a Follies be without a story from one of its most regular contributors the once great state and now most in debt and dysfunctional state of California. From the HotAir link above:

Welcome to 2015, with the usual hopes for new beginnings and fresh starts. Along with that, there is the expected flood of new laws going into effect all across the nation as proof of the various legislative bodies getting the work of the people done. The people of California in particular will see the fruits of their elected officials’ labors if they show up at the DMV. (As if the lines weren’t long enough already.) Millions of illegal immigrants will now be able to show up without fear of arrest or deportation and get themselves a shiny new driver’s license.

If you needed any further proof of exactly how far the immigration situation in the country has deteriorated, California has joined several other states in completely throwing in the towel here. It’s long been established that driving is a privilege, not a right, and that privilege can be taken away for any of a number of offenses which include driving while impaired, failing to obtain proper registration, inspection and insurance documents or just running too many stop signs. But not, it seems, for violating the nation’s borders, entering illegally, failing to pay taxes or the rest of the fundamental rules under our system of laws which are broken daily by illegal aliens.

Of course Reuters, the AP and the major networks are all referring this as a great stride forward for the thousands of “undocumented” or “immigrants”.

It really is amazing how the fact that all those getting said driver’s licenses are first and foremost illegally in the United States is being swept under the rug by the major news outlets by ensuring they follow the speech code of political correctness rather than the actual legal code established in the Constitution.

Not all are cheering though. From via CBS News:

In Long Beach protesters blasted the law, saying the 141 million dollars budgeted for the program would be better spent on legal residents.

Damn Long Beach protesters. How DARE they expect tax dollars be spent on those who respect the law rather than break the law. Don’t those ignorants realize that the “transformation” is upon us and it is our duty to comply?

This snip from the Columbus dispatch story sums it up:

Celia Rayon, a 49-year-old warehouse worker from Anaheim, emerged smiling from the Stanton office clutching her new driving permit. For nearly two decades, the Mexican immigrant has refrained from driving, relying on rides from co-workers to get to her job.

You can’t go out anywhere,” she said, adding she’d like to make a 40-hour trip to visit relatives in Georgia once she passes her road test. “Now we’re going to feel more secure.”

Secure the border? Enforce the law? Why you quaint little fool. Don’t you know that the “new” America, the “transformed” America is an America founded on Feelings? And what better way to show our feelings than to grant millions of people who’s first act in this country was to break our laws the privilege of unimpeded interstate travel.

#3  Target’s white Annie ‘offends’ black mom

My New Year’s Day column espoused on just how fragile our system of government and the honor required to keep it:

America has survived 238 New Year days since 1777 thanks to the sacrifice of patriots before us and the Constitution they gave us. Yet that Constitution and the rule of law it demands is only as good as the honor of the men and women sworn to protect it.

Without honor and respect for those founding principles the entire system begins to fail.

No, it won’t come crashing down in a single cataclysmic day, but it will come down none the less.

And the cracks are starting to show. Over a decade of politically Balkanizing us into one group against another is taking its toll.

Just look at how quickly one “hands up, don’t shoot” lie turned into a media generated, Al Sharpton fomented, nationwide “truth” that dare not be questioned.

Look at how easily peaceful protests turned into violent hate fests creating the atmosphere that contributed to the assassination of two New York City police officers.

The Sharpton line got left on the editing floor before making the final print version but the result of his and his ilk’s constant stirring of hate and daily deals of race cards comes front and center makes the inaugural list of 2015.

As the link states, Target’s in store ads promoting a clothing line tied to the remake of the classic movie portray a white Annie. Yet the remake stars black actress Quvenzhane Wallis as the endearing little orphan.

Sooooooooo, in typical, knee jerk reaction a mother by the L’Sean Rinique Shelton took accusing Target of racism. Why? Because, according to her story, she and her 8 year old bi-racial daughter saw the ad and in a most very adult tone turned to mommy and according to the original yahoo story there was this exchange:

She saw the ad and said to me, ‘That’s not what Annie looks like. How come the new black Annie isn’t good enough? Does that mean I’m not good enough?’” Rinique tells Yahoo Parenting.

Rinique says her jaw dropped. “I explained to her that the original Annie was white, and that both Annies are beautiful, and that sometimes people make mistakes and have to apologize for them,” the Delaware mom, who is a regular Target shopper, says. “Then we started singing ‘It’s a Hard-Knock Life’ while she got back to doing her chores.”

That an 8 year old little girl sees a “white” Annie and immediately goes to a “I’m not good enough” race issue is one thing, that the mother immediately goes to the “I’m owed an apology” without knowing all the facts is another, but then for Ms. Shelton to take to the internet to bash Target in a petition illustrates the current epidemic this nation now has of every individual misperception of any perceived slight being orchestrated by some vast racist conspiracy to keep minorities as a permanent underclass: (Too bad minorities like Ms. Shelton never bother to look at the 50 years of Democrat party thumb on the masses through government sharecropping but that’s another story.):

“In the current stench of racism and division amongst Americans, why would Target single-handedly disrespect Quvenzhane Wallis and add more pain to injury as it relates to race relations?” …….”These grossly misleading ads are adding to the divide and does not give young African American girls aspiring to become actors anything to be optimistic about.”

But as it turns out, Target meant to slight no one, and had the following statement:

“At Target, we appreciate the opportunity to hear from our guests. We’re proud of our Annie for Target collection, which was inspired by the recently released remake of the family classic and designed by the film’s costume designer…With regard to the marketing of the collection, girls from a variety of backgrounds were featured within the campaign, reflecting that anyone can embody the spirit and character of Annie.

“As for the involvement of Quvenzhane Wallis, we had conversations with her team about being in the campaign, but ultimately it did not come to fruition. Fortunately, we had the pleasure of working with Ms. Wallis a number of times, including appearances at Target’s sales meeting in September and a launch event in New York City in November. We had a great experience working with Ms. Wallis and appreciate her efforts in promoting this collection.

And so it goes. The truth was that Ms. Wallis HAD been involved in other activities with Target, Target WOULD have used her but they couldn’t come to her terms, and Target HAD used many other girls but this particular part had girls with lighter rather than darker skin “reflecting that anyone can embody the spirit and character of Annie.”

I keep hearing that this nation is in desperate need of a “conversation” on race. Yet how can we ever have a conversation when the current climate is nothing but accuse first get the facts later?

We will never “get past” the race issue in America until we first stop seeing every slight, every issue, every “mistake” through a prism of racism .

But then again, maybe that’s why such conversations aren’t happening. There’s far more attention to be had being angry and far more money to be made extorting concessions then there is, “we’re all in this together, it’s time we started accepting that”. As regular readers of the Corner and those who know me personally already know, I could care less what level of melanin a person has.

The ONLY things that matter to me when extending a hand of friendship or preparing my pen to oppose is whether said person or organization believes in this nations founding principles, its Constitution and the rule of law that is required to uphold it all.

Anyone, and every thing that promotes the breakdown of those three pillars of our republic is helping no one and hurting everyone.

When the goal of an individual or a group is to Balkanize America into group against group, class against class all for the sake of wielding political power it is the duty of EVERY American, regardless of skin color to stand up against such destructive ideology.

To do not, is to accede to the very tyranny the puppet masters claim to be against.

For the truth is, on a day to day, out in the real world main street level, the main issue holding people of all color back is lack of jobs due to an overbearing, all controlling federal bureaucracy steeped in liberal ideology handing out just enough crumbs to keep the masses from starving while at the same time stoking their fears and anxiety into bonfires of hate against their fellow Americans.

As always, thanks for stopping by and I’ll see ya round the Corner.
