Father Time writes the new kid

January 3, 2016

NewYear1911SatEvePostWhile cleaning out the desk of recently departed Father Time, workers discovered among his papers a letter, written in his own hand, and addressed to a “Baby New Year” with the instructions “Not to be opened until 12:01 am. January 1, 2016. It was organized by various countries and world hot spots and tries to give the new kid a leg up on his new gig. Portions are reprinted below:

Hey kid,

If you are reading this then my time truly did come and I really have marched on. As you’re looking around noticing that nothing is in order, chaos abounds and common sense is nowhere to be found know that humans alone choose how to spend and define their time. If chaos reigns, it’s all theirs. Their time, their choices, their results.

A few thoughts on what’s driving the chaos:

You’ll hear time and again you live in “the richest country on Earth”. Politically useful, but misleading in truth. The U.S. is a debtor, not a creditor nation. What stood at less than $6 trillion in national debt in 2000 will top $19 trillion during your year. First day on the job and your share is already over $58,000.

Income Inequality is a favorite these days. With anemic economic growth and stagnant wages the demagogues are out in force. But rather than debate bloated government and rogue regulations they rail against their hated “1 percent”. That they somehow managed to steal from you that which you never had. In their world, wealth is always stolen, never earned. (I know, I know, stop shaking your head, logic is not their strong suit.)

But as sure as “time marches on” also true is “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”. If there’s anything the demand it-mandate it crowd is good at, it’s convincing the economically illiterate that their success, is just one additional tax or regulation away. So blinded are they by the utopia being preached in their face, they don’t even feel the bulls eye of debt being slapped on their backs.

The only proven income equalizer is a growing, vibrant economy driven by motivated citizens each following their own individual dreams to the benefit of all. No government program can ever do that.

You will also hear the incessant Presidential refrain of “that’s not who we are” to justify his politics of open borders and unfettered immigration. He will then manipulate the “America is a nation of immigrants” truth to gloss over the lie that the immigration of then is no different than the immigration of today.

The millions that came through Ellis Island were of a different time in a different world. There was no massive welfare state draining the national treasury and the unskilled labor was actually needed. Assimilation wasn’t just a word, it was a way of life. Putting the old country behind, learning English and becoming American were the critical components that made our “melting pot” society the unified national force that saved the world when it was needed most.

Over the next year, you’ll hear much, see much, and be tugged in every direction. Believe nothing at first, look behind every sound bite, and when you walk into that voting booth in November to choose the 45th President of these United States, take with you the words of the 40th, Ronald Wilson Reagan:

“If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.”

And that kid, holds true no matter what year you’re in. So please, do your best to help em along, the world needs those damn Yankees now more than ever.
