Of innuendo, tweets, and Obamacare redux

In a week that started with FBI director James Comey coughing up fur balls of nothingness to the House Intelligence Committee, saw the brilliance of Judge Neil Gorsuch showing the Senate Judiciary Committee (and the world for that matter) just what a federal judge should be overshadowed by a media obsession with parsing Presidential tweets and what business ties former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort may or may not have had with a Russian billionaire a decade ago and ended with a Republican Party  Keystone Kops episode of “Obamacare 2.0”, any American attempting to board a flight to D.C. with a pitchfork in hand could be forgiven post haste.

A short reminder of how we got here.

The date was March 21, 2010, the column headline: “Historic healthcare vote gives Obama/Pelosi a yes with lots of  IF’s.”

One of the most pointed “If’s” was:

“IF you believe that passing 2700 pages of manure that spreads trillions of dollars of additional debt and taxes across the land on the backs of future generations:

  1. without providing an ounce tort reform,
  2. does not allow the ability to buy insurance across state lines, and
  3. restricts citizens’ control of their own healthcare costs by not expanding health savings accounts.

is somehow a “good” thing, then by all means, celebrate with abandon, the lobotomy was a complete success.”

Included in that column was a warning to both sides:

“IF you are a Republican, “Blue Dog” Democrat, or fiscally conservative Independent opposed to this farce and preparing to stop it before too much damage is done, consider yourself warned that just riding the wave of “NO” is not enough. For every item you strip or oppose, submit two that are positive, incremental, common sense reforms.”

“IF you are a Democrat who voted for this attack on personal liberty and the Constitution itself, you have26 seven months to find a spine and return to this country’s founding principles, else you WILL find no celebration come that evening on the first Tuesday this November.”

Seven years later we are witnessing the sad truth that neither party heeded one word of any of it.

The Democrat party’s insistence of sticking by their President’s lies of “if you like your doctor/plan you can keep your doctor/plan” and “I will sign a universal health care bill…..that will cover every American and cut the cost of a typical family’s premium by up to $2,500 a year.” has left it now in 2017 eviscerated of political power across the land.

The Republican Party fares no better.  From the Tea Party surge of 2010 that began its restoration to power to controlling both houses of Congress and the White House today, the same battle cry was trumpeted across the land year in, year out: “Repeal Obamacare”.

A pox on both their houses.

Beyond the hyperbole, behind the political posturing is one simple truth:  The Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare is the single worst piece of legislation to come out of the United States Congress since the temperance movement hijacked it and shoved out the 18th Amendment.

And just like the Prohibition fiasco of the 20th century, there is only one way to correct this most dreadful mistake of the 21st:  full and unfettered repeal.

Yes, there needs to be a reasonable sunset date to allow for a transition but after that the beast is slayed; never again to return.

For the next three months forget about it.  Yes, forget about it.  Focus instead on infrastructure and tax reform to spur economic growth and then, and only then, begin the full, open and transparent hearings to replace Obamacare with the common sense, workable reforms that were rejected by the Democrats in 2009.

That is what should have happened.  And it would have happened “IF” the politicians on both sides of the political aisle in Washington would for once in their pathetic self-centered lives, put the American people’s desire for access to decent, affordable healthcare above their desire to use the power of government to control their lives.

But as we now know, when it comes to Congress mustering up the courage to do the right thing for the sake of the country, “IF” is a mighty big word; A word that is sadly, just too big for their weak little minds to comprehend.
