What a difference a day makes

November 7, 2008

Yes, what a difference a day makes. Within in a single day our glorious President-elect has given us great insight as to how he intends to reign. By picking re-tread Clinton hack Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of Staff, Barack Obama tells us very clearly there is most certainly change coming and that change is arriving via freight train on time, on message, and right up your arse if you don’t agree.

While the old media loved to paint Karl Rove as the ultimate political hack, the evil puppet master, pulling the nations strings to ensure the rule of the Republican dynasty, there shall be none of that regarding the anointed one’s first appointment. They are all a-gush with praise for the Emanuel pick as a man who “knows his way around Washington” and will use his “sharp elbows” to push forth the Obama agenda. The very same attributes that made Rove a rogue, now lift Emanuel to near saint status.

And just what are “sharp elbows” anyway?

According to William Safire’s political dictionary:
sharp elbows: Pushiness or assertiveness; the ability to protect political turf or to encroach on that of others.
It goes all the way back to 1838 when British essayist Thomas Carlyle referenced that all men live by elbowing their way through the world, both giving and receiving offense. As recent as 1980 a German politician was censured for using the term against his opponent. Yet 28 years later, Safire notes, the term is needed to illustrate the macho or aggressive side.
Jim Reilly on a wordreference.com forum posted this gem back in January: Sharp elbows are the worst–when you are poked with one, it can really hurt!

So now “pushiness or assertiveness” is needed to bring about bi-partisan change? Yeh right.

Rahm Emanuel voted lock step with the Democrat party more the 98% of the time. This guy is as bi-partisan as Hugo Chavez.

This is a guy who at a celebratory dinner for President Clinton’s first election, picked up a steak knife and began rattling off percieved “betrayers” names followed by plunging the knife into the table and “dead, dead, dead” after each one. (I don’t recall any such action by Republicans but if they had……..)

This is the thug who once sent a dead fish to a Democratic pollster he was angry with.

Paul Begala states: “He’s got this big old pair of brass balls, and you can just hear ’em clanking when he walks down the halls of Congress. The Democratic Party is full of Rhodes scholars – Rahm is a road warrior.”

The Telegraph has an excellent profile of the new Chief Saint:

Barack Obama garnered tens of millions of votes with the mantra of “change”. By borrowing from Reagan’s playbook he tapped into the feeling of a majority of American’s that Washington was the problem. Only Obama convinced people that a “new” Washington, “his” Washington, could wave the magic wand and make all their problems go away. (Check out the lady in the youtube clip in the November 5th post)

In his own words: “The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a different result.”

Yet in his announcement of selecting a long time Washington insider to be his chief of staff, Obama says: “No one I know is better at getting things done than Rahm Emanuel.”

While that may be true Mr. Obama, Emanuel is a full 180 from the partisanship you promised to end, and as the record goes, your first betrayal of promise to the American electorate.

Stay tuned, there is no doubt more to come……..
