Obama petulance, media tears drown out Netanyahu win

March 22, 2015

Leftists on both sides of the world were giddy with anticipation. Network producers around the globe were planning their historic broadcasts. NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell was so excited for what was coming she trekked thousands of miles to tell the story in person.

With the last pre-election polling in Israel showing current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu trailing politically left candidate Isaac Herzog and his Zionist Union party the champagne corks were but a formality away from spontaneously popping.

And why not? Millions of dollars from all over the world had been poured into the effort to topple Netanyahu, former Obama campaign advisers were directing anti-Netanyahu get out the vote efforts, and even the President of the United States of America had made known his displeasure with Mr. Netanyahu.

With momentum like that, who needs an election?

And then the unthinkable happened.

The Israeli people chose to be people rather than sheep. Instead of delivering an embarrassing defeat to Bibi, they gave him a resounding victory. Instead of letting outsiders tell them how to think, they walked into their voting booths and thought for themselves.

The predicted 24 to 21 loss was trampled by a 30 to 24 victory.

But with the story lines declaring Netanyahu’s defeat already written, what was the media to do?

Why do what it always does when the facts interfere with the narrative; invent a new one. And they built it around an out of context Netanyahu Facebook post on election morning: “Arab voters are going to the vote in droves. The Left-wing organizations are bringing them to the polling stations in buses,”

And thus, Netanyahu, the racist was born. No longer was it about the election but rather his vile racist rhetoric.

And if you only get your news from those organizations that couldn’t wait to report of Netanyahu’s defeat, you’ve most likely never heard the full context of that quote stating that the problem was “not the Arab citizens vote in itself, but rather by money supply from abroad of foreign Governments and bring them en masse to the polls in an organized manner and thus distort the will of the voters, citizens of Israel, for the left.”

America would not tolerate foreign governments meddling in our elections, yet Benjamin Netanyahu is a racist for calling out such activities in his own?

But the loss for America is not in the media narrative, it is in the Presidential behavior sure to follow. The man with skin as thin as an onion and a petulant streak as wide as the Mississippi does not accept that which does not bend to his will.

And it will be that skin and that streak, not policy and practicality that will drive American-Israeli relations for the next 22 months.

The same man who had no problem placing congratulatory calls to newly “elected” leaders of Russia, China, Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Afghanistan as of press time for this column had instead only had this to say via Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Wednesday: “The United States and this administration are deeply concerned by divisive rhetoric that seeks to marginalize Arab-Israeli citizens,”

Imagine that, the man whom poll after poll shows American’s themselves say has divided more than united our own country is lecturing Mr. Netanyahu about his.

Obama has always been only about Obama but this is over the top behavior even for him.

But then again maybe what really has him so upset is that by the time it’s all said and done, Bibi will still be in his office when Obama is at last forced to vacate his.

A day that for both America and Israel cannot come soon enough.
